The importance of teaching patriotism to our children
by Erin Edwards - Social Media Marketing Director
As a parent who has witnessed the evolving landscape of education, I reflect fondly on the days when patriotism was a cornerstone of our daily routine. Growing up, we started each morning with a salute to the flag, a simple yet profound ritual that united us in our shared appreciation for the United States of America. Assemblies to honor our veterans and mock elections were more than just events; they were opportunities to foster a deep sense of pride and responsibility towards our country.
However, times have changed, and as I observe the current climate, I notice a pervasive sense of discontent towards our nation, regardless of which political party holds power. This sentiment is baffling to me, especially given the myriad opportunities and freedoms that the United States provides. It is in times like these that I realize the critical importance of teaching our children the value of patriotism and the privileges that come with living in this great country.
Patriotism is not just about waving the flag or singing the national anthem. It is about understanding and appreciating the values and principles that form the foundation of our nation. When we instill patriotism in our children, we teach them to respect democracy, to value freedom, and to recognize the sacrifices made by those who came before us. This sense of unity and common purpose is essential in creating a cohesive society where individuals work together for the greater good.
Patriotism fosters a sense of belonging and identity. By celebrating national holidays, participating in community service, and learning about the history of our country, children develop a connection to their homeland. This connection is vital in nurturing a sense of responsibility and stewardship. When children feel that they are part of something bigger than themselves, they are more likely to contribute positively to their communities and the nation as a whole.
We have strayed from this idea…that something is bigger than us. Our children are taught to focus on how they have been victimized, or how the color of their skin makes them other. More than ever we need to focus on unity and the principles that unite us.
Living in the United States comes with freedoms that many around the world do not enjoy. The ability to speak freely, to practice one’s religion, and to pursue happiness are not universal rights. By teaching our children about these freedoms and the struggles endured to secure them, we cultivate gratitude and a deeper appreciation for the country we call home. This gratitude inspires a desire to protect and uphold these freedoms for future generations.
One of the benefits I have found in homeschooling my children is the ability to incorporate patriotic education into our daily life. Unlike some public schools where traditions have faded, homeschooling allows me to emphasize the importance of patriotism and tailor our curriculum to include lessons on American history, civics, and the significance of national symbols. My French friend often reminds me that homeschooling is against the law in France, making me all the more grateful for the freedom I have to educate my children in a manner that aligns with our values.
Patriotic education is not about blind allegiance; it is about creating informed citizens who understand the complexities of their country and are equipped to engage in constructive dialogue. By teaching children to appreciate the strengths and acknowledge the flaws of the United States, we prepare them to be thoughtful, active participants in democracy. Critical thinking and a balanced perspective are essential in fostering a generation that can contribute to the ongoing improvement of our nation.
In a world where negativity can often overshadow the positives, it is crucial to remind our children of the unique privileges and responsibilities that come with being an American. By teaching patriotism, we honor the past, appreciate the present, and build a brighter future. Let us embrace the opportunity to instill a love for our country in our children, ensuring that the values of freedom, unity, and gratitude continue to thrive for generations to come.
I believe in you, I believe in us, I’m rooting for this country,
